Midlands Area Parenting Partnership are delivering Free 2 hour Triple P Positive Parenting Workshops on a range of topics from Dealing with Disobedience, Managing Fighting and Aggression, and Developing Good Bedtime Routines for parents of children aged 10 years and younger.
What are Triple P Workshops / Discussion Groups for Parents of Children 10 years and younger?
A workshop is an evidence based, 2 hour, small group session run by a trained and accredited Triple P practitioner for really common situations. It is provided free of charge. Each session brings together approx. 4-12 parents who are experiencing similar parenting concerns. There are three topics to choose from:
• Dealing with disobedience
This workshop provides examples of common forms of disobedience and some reasons why children have difficulty learning to follow instructions. A number of positive parenting strategies are covered to help parents develop a personal plan to prevent disobedience, teach their child limits, and also to manage disobedience when necessary.
• Managing fighting and aggression
This workshop covers the skills that children need to be able to cooperate and get along with others. Parents are encouraged to share their experiences of aggressive behaviour from their children, and discuss some of the reasons children fight. Parents learn how to teach skills such as sharing, communicating and being gentle. They also prepare plans to manage times when fighting and aggression do occur.
• Developing Good Bedtime Routines
This workshop explores different problems parents commonly face at bedtime and some of the reasons why they happen. The skills children need to get into a good bedtime routine are discussed and parents are introduced to positive parenting strategies to help prevent problems. The approaches to encouraging children to stay in their own bed throughout the night are discussed; the gentle, the gradual and the direct approach. All approaches are evidence-based and parents choose which approach suits them best
What happens at a Workshop?
In a relaxed group session, your practitioner will give you tips and suggestions for dealing with your child’s behaviour. You’ll see short video clips showing other parents successfully dealing with the same issue and you’ll be encouraged to share your thoughts with the other parents in the group, if you wish to. You’ll also be given a take-home workbook with simple exercises and information to help you try your new strategies at home. Your practitioner will also offer an optional support phone call two weeks after the workshop to talk about your experience of using the skills from the workshop, progress you have made and any other small tweaks that might be helpful.
How long do the sessions take and how many do I attend? A Triple P Workshop session takes two hours and the optional phone call from your practitioner two weeks later, approx. 20 min’s.
